Induced Deformation and Protection of a Hybrid Timber–Masonry Historical Structure from Adjacent Metro Tunneling

The construction of the tunnels Metro Line 4 and Gulou Station in central Nanjing poses a potential threat to nearby historic building, Tower, due relatively small spacing deteriorated structure behaviors. Two aspects are important for protection Tower: (i) reducing soil movement caused by tunnel–station (ii) increasing total stiffness this sensitive building. This research first presents main features two triple-arch tunnel as connection between Station. details excavation means procedures tunnels, together with engineering measures that tend reduce disturbance during excavation, presented. Meanwhile, improve overall additional support masonry terrace upper timber is also discussed. Moreover, station could influence settlement development Tower suggested. measured ground displacement found be limited allowable values, indicating aforementioned protective adequate protect hybrid timber–masonry historical structures tunneling.
